Hard to believe, but once upon a time we called it New England Contra Dancing. It spread quickly and changed dramatically in character in many ways. At some point we had to drop the "New England" bit. Other parts of the country, having their own traditional dance and music traditions made contra dance look a bit like kudzu and about as welcome and unavoidable.
